A closer look at metal recycling

Metal, along with glass, is one of the easiest materials to recycle. Metal items can be recycled over and over again without losing quality. It is important to remember, however, that metal is a non-renewable natural resource. While more glass can be made, metal must be mined. By correctly recycling metal, we are not only saving the remaining natural resources, we are saving the energy used to mine those resources. The biggest challenge when it comes to metal recycling is where and how to best recycle those materials.

For our curbside recycling program, metal really just means cans. The cans may be made out of aluminum, tin, steel or a composite of two types of metals. All of these can be recycled as long as they are rinsed clean. Soup cans, pet food, vegetables, etc. are all great examples of materials to use. The labels may be left on but do make sure you fully remove the lid and place it inside the can. This will help to prevent any possible injury. During the recycling process, the metal is melted down and reused, often to form new cans.

For other types of metals including pots/pans, scrap metal, car parts, etc., these are also recyclable but not through the curbside recycling program. Call your local junkyard, check your township website or find a scrap metal recycler to get more information on what items they can take and how they are recycled. Depending on the type and quantity of metal, you may even get paid for recycling it.
